The home screen is the motel painting, then the cabinets. Every visit draws its own arrangement: Reporhogo, Bio, Burrows, Faunarratik and Erratik stand either as big cabinets or as small chips under them, and the rows always come out full.
| Cabinet | What it is |
|---|---|
| Korong! | Air-puck against the eighteen Masks of the Fauna, in the tradition of Shufflepuck Café (Brøderbund, 1988). |
| Fauna Chess | Fairy chess against the Fauna. |
| Erratik | The memory game. |
| Faunarratik | A tale built with the Masks. Every block of a Mask's sheet (portrait, stats, formula, appearance, faction, masks, motto, profile, powers, Maskomatics, hexagram, mini-stories, Krewsmatics) is a card to pick; the text blocks lie face down, a tap turns one over and takes it, up to three, and the Mask changes expression. Show all turns every card over. Let the Kerema wrap it saves the tale as a text file. English only. |
| Katabatik | A die is thrown on the cabinet: Konnect4, Sampler, Akasztófa (the Hungarian hangman, on a Hungarian keyboard; a vowel counts with its accents or bare; a win brings a short unsigned quotation to guess), Mastermind or FaunInvaders (the 18 Masks march and drop bombs; each Mask throws in its own way, after its character: Ts'ui Pên's bomb forks into two paths, one real; Honey Buzzard's stops in mid-air and comes back lower; Hátra Lövés's comes back from the ground; Maiden Call's comes to the player who comes to it; ?fi=classic in the address brings back the throws of the first version). |
| 3615 | The K Terminal, a Minitel emulator: https://mauktenieb.github.io/3615/ |
| VHS | A television on a tape deck: Motel Sound and your own YouTube tapes. |
| Photofauna | The photo editor: takes or opens a photo and applies 44 looks. |
| FaunaTor | Opens web pages and v3 .onion sites through Tor clients that run in the page. |
| Skoporhogo | The Fauna in an isometric hotel room. |
| Reporhogo | Reporhogo searches forty-one code forges for a topic and collects the URLs of the repositories it finds. |

Always there, on every screen: Motel Sound (the Korhogo jukebox, open to every visitor), Kapture (camera and microphone recorder), Baku Boom (back to the menu), FX on/off (remembered), FR/EN.
The painting takes the visitor's hour (bluish night, pink dawn, orange evening). The television flickers and changes channel in the snow; some visits bring a storm behind the window, with thunder when FX are on; Plague of Justinian's cloud rumbles; the scarab breathes; Aube's hands glint pink, Maiden Call's telephone blue, Auvergne's eyes green; the cigarette smokes; a beetle sometimes crosses the picture; the longer one stays, the more the picture wears (grain, tape tears, scratches). A light runs over the cabinets now and then, or one flickers; the neons of the chips falter; the devices of the motel call (the television leads to VHS, the telephone to 3615, the chessboard to Fauna Chess, the cards to Erratik, Unkle Maukie to Korong!, the Koins on the floor to 3615 KOINS, the lyre to Motel Sound, the window to FaunaTor, the boxes to Katabatik). On screen, the sign reads INSERT KOIN, INTERSEKTION, NOIR INSEKT or SEKTOR INN, drawn at random, and changes every few seconds under the visitor's eyes; the address stays insertkoin. The Bio tile reads BIO, BIOGRAPHIK or BIOTENIEB; the Koins sometimes read Kinos. Each time the title screen opens, it takes the faint colour of one Mask drawn at random: a soft wash over the picture, its lines and golds leaning a little toward it.
A few seconds after the title screen opens, then now and then, a guide wanders along the cabinets, shining in its colour when it arrives: C7H5N3O6 (blue), Honey Buzzard (red), Ts'ui Pên (orange) or Croisière Noire (its own grey), drawn from their Korong! sprites. Touched, it walks every cabinet and chip, then Motel Sound and Kapture, lights each one and names it with one line. A click elsewhere, or Escape, stops it. The mouse or a finger also grabs it and throws it: it slides and bounces off the edges like the Korong! puck, silent, lighting up at each impact; after one or two impacts it lays a Koin that goes to the counter by itself (one or two Koins at most per visit, however long one plays). Now and then, hitting an edge, it swears. Thrown in the middle of a visit, it takes it up again a few seconds later. Every visit starts on any tile or menu, at random.
The 3615 Minitel shows on its home screen (3615 KORHOGO) the five first of Korong! and of FaunInvaders, and in 3615 HALL the HALL OF KAVE: the twenty best players of all the games, one total per player, points of every game plus Koins earned. Results go out on the open Nostr network, the Minitel's own transport; the routine of this repository rewrites palmares.json every hour. Rules, points, transport and checks: PALMARES.md.
In the VHS deck, the key ♡ puts the track playing into the visitor's own cassette, « Korhogo Kuration », shown on the deck's shelf; the key ♥ takes it out again. The cassette goes out on the open Nostr network, signed with the Minitel's key (ik-kuration.js, one addressable event per visitor, kind 30078, d = korhogo-kuration); the browser key appears with the first ♡. Each cassette has a short address, https://mauktenieb.github.io/k/<first 12 characters of the public key>; the root site's 404 page sends it on to insertkoin/?k=, or to fr.html?k= for a French browser. kuration.html lists every cassette with a « play all » link on YouTube; kuration.html?k=<key> shows one cassette, its tracks and its author; the Minitel lists them in 3615 KURATIONS.
ik.koins in the browser).Paste a YouTube channel (or playlist) link and press REC: the page records it onto a cassette inside the visitor's browser (kg-vhs-scrape.js). The page tries several roads and keeps the first that answers:
YT_KEY (whole channel, with dates, durations, views, likes, comments); The page asks a refusing source again, a few times; a cassette read in part shows its count (for example 56 / 200). Cassettes stay in the visitor's browser. Pick one on the shelf for its tools: CSV, JSON, XLSX, TXT and MD exports (title, link, publication, duration, views, likes, comments), and ERASE (press twice).
A second row of the shelf, CURATORS, offers compilations of other artists' music on YouTube, chosen by eight curators. Each label shows, in marker, a genre and a date of the French Republican calendar (the day the cassette last changed), in an ink for each genre: Death metal in red, Black metal in black, Jazz in blue, Folk & chanson in green. The row offers a Top 60, one compilation per genre (99 videos at most; Pot-pourri for genres under 4 videos) and the 10 latest dated cassettes, one per genre and per weekly watch. Labels name genres and dates; hovering a cassette shows its criteria.
A CURATORS cassette offers CSV, JSON, XLSX, TXT and MD exports by criteria (genre, date, Republican date, selection rule, ranking order, tracks, YouTube links) and YOUTUBE, which opens the cassette as YouTube playlists of 50 videos, YouTube's limit. File names follow the Republican calendar: 29-vendemiaire-235_curators_001.json.
The cassettes come from Curators (page: https://mauktenieb.github.io/curators/): every Monday a watch reads the curators' public sources, ranks the artists (number of curators, then best rank in Rate Your Music's top 10,000, then number of mentions) and writes kg-vhs-curations.js; the workflow curators copies that file here. The deck loads it when the VHS cabinet opens.
FaunaTor runs Tor inside the page: two Tor clients compiled to WebAssembly reach the network through Snowflake, the Tor Project's own bridges (WebSocket first, WebRTC last); the page reaches Tor through the Snowflake broker and its volunteer proxies.
tor-web.js, tor-web_bg.wasm.onion (v3): andrewtheguy/webtor-rs (MIT) → tor-onion.js, tor-onion_bg.wasmtor/), so the web client reads it from here.A page out of reach shows Your Kalabass was rejected. Apply later., with the reason in small type underneath.
Photofauna, the photo editor of Insert Koin, reproduces the looks of the photo apps of 2008–2019: 44 looks (simulated film, toy cameras, historical processes, instants, glitch, painting, shapes…), an editor with adjustments, recipes kept inside the saved PNG, GIF export, deterministic renders. The camera opens on a Mask drawn at random. Photofauna saves every shot at once, untouched. Looks pile up: Keep fixes the current look into the picture and the next one goes on top; Undo steps back, last look first, then last layer. The saved PNG keeps the fixed layers in its recipe. fotofauna.html contains the whole app.
ik-ecran.js draws the one screen of the machines: the same 4:3 picture, the same frame, the same size and the same place in every program. On a wide screen it stands on the left, as large as the height allows, and the program's controls stand on the right; on a phone it stands on top, full width, and the controls follow below. Each program changes only the rendering of the glass (VHS tape wear; the Minitel's bulging tube, reflection and phosphor; the clean viewfinder of the camera; the camcorder's REC and counter) and its controls: the deck of the VHS, the keyboard of the Minitel, the modes, shutter, looks and settings of Photofauna. A canvas, a video or an image goes through one WebGL pass; a page made of HTML, or the YouTube player, gets layers laid over it. The dressing stays on its own layers, so saved images keep the program's own picture. FX OFF and reduced motion freeze the noise and the bands; a phone gets a lighter screen.
Insert Koin names everything it saves (Photofauna, Faunarratik, the Sampler, Kapture, VHS exports, the Motel Sound list) by the French Republican calendar, then the program, then a counter of the day: 18-vendemiaire-235_photofauna_001.jpg. The day is the visitor's own; years III, VII, XI and XV count as sextile, as in the calendar of the time; Romme's rule follows (ik-name.js).
Every file is at the top level; the folders are tor/, notes/, tools/ and .github/. One upload updates the site.
