Spotify party queue for house parties. Guests scan a QR, search, and queue songs
to the host's Spotify. They cannot skip, pause, or take over playback, and every
pick passes a vibe check. Guests need no Spotify account, no AirPlay access, no
WiFi - just the QR.

Spotify's own sharing options - Jam, shared speakers, handing your phone around - all give guests full playback control. One mistap hits play instead of queue, skips the song mid-chorus, or swaps in someone else's playlist. Pass the Aux is the controlled gateway: guests can search and queue, nothing else.
The live client uses a warm suprematist skin after Kazimir Malevich's Suprematist Painting (1916-17). Floating geometric shapes drift, collide, ripple on taps, and can be dragged while guests wait to queue a track.
/host and authenticates with
Spotify Premium. The first Spotify user to complete host OAuth is bound as the
host in KV; after that, any other Spotify identity is refused. Guests never
log in, and Spotify development mode limits OAuth to the owner and explicitly
allowlisted users.Print the QR, tape it to the wall, start the party from /host, done.
client/ - Vite + React, built as static assetsworker/ - Cloudflare Worker API that proxies Spotify with the host's tokenserver/ + render.yaml - legacy Render deployment kept live until cutovernpm install
npm run build
npx wrangler dev
Set local Worker secrets in .dev.vars when testing real Spotify auth:
SPOTIFY_CLIENT_ID=...
SPOTIFY_CLIENT_SECRET=...
SPOTIFY_REDIRECT_URI=http://localhost:8787/api/auth/callback
Then open /host and continue through Spotify OAuth. Guests continue to use the
same-origin app and relative /api/* routes. When no party is live, guests see a
closed-party state and the Worker refuses Spotify-backed search and queue
requests server-side.
aux.tejas.nyc is my house party — a single Cloudflare Worker I run. Yours is
about five minutes away. You need a free Cloudflare account and a Spotify Premium
account for yourself as the host (Spotify's queue controls are Premium-only).
Guests need nothing — no account, no app, no login, no WiFi.
1. Put the app on the internet. Click the button. Cloudflare copies this repo, builds it, and deploys it to your own account:
You end up with a live URL like https://pass-the-aux.<you>.workers.dev.
2. Make a free Spotify app. Open the
Spotify developer dashboard, create an
app, and copy its Client ID and Client Secret. In that app's settings, add
one Redirect URI: your live URL plus /api/auth/callback — e.g.
https://pass-the-aux.<you>.workers.dev/api/auth/callback.
3. Hand the app your Spotify keys. From a clone of the repo, set three secrets:
npx wrangler secret put SPOTIFY_CLIENT_ID # from step 2
npx wrangler secret put SPOTIFY_CLIENT_SECRET # from step 2
npx wrangler secret put SPOTIFY_REDIRECT_URI # your callback URL from step 2
4. Start the party. Go to /host on your live URL, connect Spotify, and hit
start. Print the QR code, tape it to the wall, and guests can scan, search, and
queue — nothing else. Done.
Prefer the command line to the button? Fork the repo and run
npm install && npx wrangler deploy instead of step 1 — it builds the client,
uploads it as Workers Assets, and auto-creates the PARTY_QUEUE_KV namespace
declared in wrangler.jsonc.
/host and starts Spotify OAuth.403 and the app shows "No party right now."Spotify development mode only allows users listed in the app's User Management screen to complete OAuth. To let a friend host:
npx wrangler kv key delete --binding PARTY_QUEUE_KV "host:spotify-user-id" --remote
The next allowlisted Spotify account to complete /host OAuth becomes the bound
host. Strangers still cannot host because Spotify refuses OAuth for accounts not
listed in User Management.
If the host Spotify account ever needs to change, delete the binding from the
production KV namespace, then have the new host start OAuth from /host:
npx wrangler kv key delete --binding PARTY_QUEUE_KV "host:spotify-user-id" --remote
