Self-Driving AI Evolution is a free, browser-based sandbox (Vite, TypeScript and Canvas 2D) where cars learn to steer, accelerate and brake through neural networks evolved by a genetic algorithm. It is planned to run on iPhone, iPad and desktop browsers.
Status: project foundation, simulation loop, seeded random generator, a built-in racetrack, headless car physics, collision detection, lap timing and manual driving. Drive the car with the keyboard (arrows or WASD, Space or ↓ to brake, R to restart) or the on-screen touch buttons; the page shows laps, current/last/best lap time, the next gate and crash feedback, and pauses while hidden. Open the page with
?mode=trainto watch a population of 50 neural cars evolve on the oval (P2-05), or runnpm run demo:trainto print 50 generations headless.npm run experiment -- run experiments/configs/smoke-oval.json --out record.jsonrecords a seeded training experiment as JSON, andnpm run experiment -- replay record.jsonchecks that it reproduces exactly (P2-07). Nothing has been shown to learn yet: fitness on one track is a training signal, not evidence, and the experiments in docs/AI_EVALUATION.md have not been run.npm run demo:vehicleprints a scripted physics run,npm run demo:collisionscripted crashes andnpm run demo:lapstimed laps. See the roadmap for verified progress.
You need Node.js 24 (the version is in .nvmrc; with nvm, run nvm use).
npm ci # install the exact dependency versions from package-lock.json
npm run dev # start a local development server, then open the printed URL
To try it on a phone or tablet on the same network, run npm run dev -- --host and open the "Network" URL on the device.
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
npm run lint | ESLint, including the architecture rules that stop modules importing the wrong layers |
npm run typecheck | TypeScript in strict mode |
npm test | Unit tests (Vitest, in Node) |
npm run build | Production build into dist/ (a static site) |
npm run test:e2e | Browser tests (Playwright) against the production build, served by vite preview and by a plain static file server, in Chromium and WebKit, including phone and tablet touch emulation |
Before the first browser test run, install the browsers: npx playwright install --with-deps chromium webkit. GitHub Actions runs all of these checks on every pull request and on main (.github/workflows/ci.yml). See docs/TESTING.md for details and the manual device checks.
The app is a static site. npm run build writes everything into dist/: index.html plus hashed JavaScript and CSS in dist/assets/. There is no server code, no API routes, no rewrites and no vercel.json. Asset paths are relative (base: './' in vite.config.ts), so dist/ works at a site root or under a sub-path. tests/e2e/staticHost.spec.ts checks both with a plain static file server.
Any static host: with Node 24, run npm ci && npm run build, then upload the contents of dist/.
Vercel: the free Hobby plan is enough; nothing here needs a paid feature.
npm run builddistnpm ci, which installs exactly what package-lock.json pins.nvmrc and engines in package.jsonmain.Previews are only visible to people who can see them under the project's deployment protection settings. Check those settings before sharing a link.
