README 전문 보기 ↗Steelview presents all sides of a divisive news issue on one page: the data and what it shows, the strongest version of each major viewpoint, the moral principles underneath them, and the specific reasons the sides disagree. Each viewpoint is steelmanned — written so that a partisan reading their own position finds it better argued than the version they would have written themselves, and reads the others as recognisable rather than caricatured. A reader who arrives holding one view should leave able to state the other views in a form their holders would endorse.
This milestone ships one topic, UK immigration, as a statically rendered page. There is no auth and no comments yet — those are future milestones (see the design spec below).
The site is served from steelview.org by the
steelview Vercel project, which builds on Node 26. Every push to main
deploys to production. www.steelview.org redirects permanently to
steelview.org, the one address canonical URLs and the sitemap use (see
lib/site.ts).
pnpm dev # dev server at localhost:3000
pnpm test:unit # node:test via tsx — content validation and pure logic
pnpm test:e2e # Playwright — builds the app, serves it on a free port, then drives it in a browser
pnpm lint # eslint
pnpm check:integrity # publication-time cross-item and editorial integrity checks
pnpm check:figures # audits figures asserted in prose against the quoted sources
pnpm build # production build
Principles are shared across topics; facts, viewpoints and cruxes belong to a topic:
content/
principles/
democratic-consent-over-membership.md
topics/
uk-immigration/
topic.md
facts/
viewpoints/
cruxes/
A shared principle contains a name and markdown body, with no topic-specific
heldBy list. Each topic.md lists the shared IDs it employs:
principles: [democratic-consent-over-membership, obligation-to-people-in-danger]
Viewpoints list the subset they rest on in their own principles field. The
loader resolves the topic's IDs from content/principles/, preserving existing
in-page anchors. Editing one definition updates every topic that references it.
The topic lists also provide the relationships for future principle-to-topic
backlinks without maintaining a second list in each principle.
The filename is the item's id, and the id is permanent — it forms the URL
anchor for that item, prefixed with its kind (/topics/uk-immigration#fact-net-migration-2024),
so renaming a file breaks every link and cross-reference to it. Each file is YAML
frontmatter (the structured fields — claim, status, sources, cross-references
to other items) plus a markdown body (the prose).
Neither facts nor file order decide reading order. Fact order is derived:
each viewpoint ranks the facts it cites and then those it acknowledges, and
the page interleaves those rankings round-robin, so no viewpoint's second
fact appears before every viewpoint has had its first
(lib/content/rank-facts.ts). Viewpoint order is an explicit order field
on each viewpoint, chosen so the sides alternate rather than cluster.
lib/content/load.ts always rejects malformed frontmatter and files that
cannot be rendered. Cross-item integrity runs only when explicitly requested
with pnpm check:integrity, so a dev server and ordinary CI remain useful
while a report is part-way through an edit. Run that command before publishing. Beyond
the zod schema shape, it enforces and unit-tests these rules:
citesFacts, acknowledges, setsAside,
principles, divides, and positions[].viewpoint must
resolve to a real item.citesFacts may only contain well-supported or contested facts;
acknowledges may only contain well-supported facts; a fact can appear
at most once across those three lists on any one viewpoint.contested fact needs at least one supports source and at least one
contests source.acknowledges list is non-empty.divides at least two viewpoints and gives a position for
each one. A crux has a tension and no body, and stays within the limits in
content/AUTHORING.md.citesFacts, acknowledges, or setsAside.heldBy are rejected.pnpm check:figures extends the sourcing rule to prose: a money, percentage
or thousands figure asserted in any markdown body must appear in a quoted
source on the same topic. It runs in CI.
Follow content/WORKFLOW.md — the seven stages a
human editor and an agent go through to produce a topic, from choosing it to
publishing, with the review points between them.
Read content/AUTHORING.md first. It is the
authoring guide: the fact-status rubric, how to phrase a claim and its body,
the sourcing and time-series rules, what makes a viewpoint a steelman and
how it is laid out and worded, the prose patterns to avoid, which rules the build enforces and which are
editorial judgement, and a checklist to run before opening a PR.
Data files behind our sources are kept outside this repo, because we don't hold
the rights to many of them. content/SOURCE-FILES.md
says where they are.
Then add a new directory under content/topics/, following the structure
above, and run pnpm check:integrity and pnpm check:figures before
publishing to check the new content validates.
Code is MIT — see LICENSE. Editorial content under content/
is CC BY 4.0 — see content/LICENSE, which also states
the boundary: the quoted source material inside each fact is not Steelview's
to license and carries its own terms.
A viewpoint is a short lead, then four to six ### sections, read on the topic
page as a walkthrough with one chart per section. Each heading is one claim, and
read alone the headings make the whole case for the title; two or three short
sentences under each say what to notice in the chart, whose choice follows from
the section's first citation. It is written for a middle-school
reader: short sentences, everyday words, citation text that states the point
and leaves figures and sources to the report it opens, and concessions that
open with "While" and say why they do not change the conclusion.
content/AUTHORING.md
is the full specification; us-iran-war is the model for how headings build an
argument.
The fact-writing guide is the authoritative specification for titles, detailed findings, linked pills, graph narratives, context, subtleties, source footnotes and collapsed methodology. Use its checklist when adding or revising facts and viewpoints.
