0.16.0, an early test release for OpenVMS x86-64 and IA64: a PCSI kit for each is on the releases page. It opens on a dashboard of the system, covers users and rights identifiers (what AUTHORIZE does, from creating and copying accounts to deleting them), shows the system's access history (who signed in, when, from where and by which route), logical names, processes, queues, system parameters, licences, installed products (with install and remove through PCSI), monitoring and the error log. Please try it on a test system first and report what you find.
Phases 1 to 14 are closed: sign-in, the read-only views, changes, creating and
deleting users, hardening (a load run and soak, docs/PHASE5.md),
access history, logical names, processes, queues, system parameters, licences,
installed products, monitoring and the error log. Their exit checks passed on the x86 test system and in a browser
through nginx proxy manager. An independent code review and an external review and
penetration test are still to come (docs/REVIEW-BRIEF.md). See docs/PLAN.md,
docs/api.md and docs/security.md.

Needs OpenVMS x86-64 V9.2-x or OpenVMS IA64 V8.4-2L3, VSI TCP/IP Services, VSI SSL3, and vms-lighttpd installed and set up. Browsers must reach Steward over HTTPS, through a proxy that ends TLS or with TLS in lighttpd. (VSI Apache can take lighttpd's place; see below.)
$ PRODUCT INSTALL STEWARD /SOURCE=dev:[dir]
$ @STEWARD$ROOT:[COM]STEWARD$CONFIGURE ! once, as SYSTEM
$ ! add the include line it prints to lighttpd's LIGHTTPD.CONF, then:
$ @STEWARD$ROOT:[COM]STEWARD$CONTROL START
$ @VMSLIGHTTPD$ROOT:[COM]VMSLIGHTTPD$CONTROL RESTART
To start at boot, answer YES to STEWARD$CONFIGURE's autostart question (or set
steward_autostart to "YES" in SYS$MANAGER:STEWARD$CONFIG.COM). Then add
@SYS$STARTUP:STEWARD$STARTUP to SYSTARTUP_VMS.COM, after TCP/IP, SSL3 and the queues:
it starts the pool by submitting a job to SYS$BATCH as the service account. Add
@SYS$STARTUP:STEWARD$SHUTDOWN to SYSHUTDWN.COM. vms-lighttpd needs its own autostart too.
Two account points:
LIGHTTPD). It becomes the only reader of the gateway secret. If lighttpd
cannot read that file, it refuses its whole configuration and serves no site at all.[STEWARD.DOC]README.VMS in the kit has the details:
Steward should also run behind VSI Apache (APACHEWS 2.4) in place of lighttpd. It uses
only standard FastCGI over TCP, and the VSI kit ships the modules it needs. It has not
been tested yet: the one attempt never got a private httpd serving at all, for
reasons in Apache, not in Steward (docs/NOTES.md, 2026-10-18). Please report how it
goes.
STEWARD$CONFIGURE still writes lighttpd files, so for Apache you set it up by hand from them:
APACHE$WWW), so Apache can read the gateway secret. Type it again on every
run: the default offered is always vms-lighttpd's account.mod_proxy, mod_proxy_fcgi, mod_proxy_balancer, mod_lbmethod_byrequests
and mod_headers, and serve STEWARD$ROOT:[WWW] as the document root of Steward's
site./api/ to the pool, one member for each pool port, with the gateway secret set
on every API request. Keep the secret in its own file, readable by Apache's account
only, and Include it:
<Proxy "balancer://steward">
BalancerMember "fcgi://127.0.0.1:19300"
BalancerMember "fcgi://127.0.0.1:19301"
</Proxy>

OpenVMS x86-64 and IA64 (VSI C, VSI TCP/IP Services, VSI OpenSSL 3), from the same
sources; tools/kit.sh builds a kit for each. The code is portable C99, and the service
also builds and runs on Linux against an in-memory stub platform for development and
tests. IA64 notes are in docs/IA64.md.
