It's a Docker Compose stack — OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Loki, Tempo, Alertmanager, Alloy, and Grafana — that collects, stores, and queries telemetry in one place, deployable with make up.
Prerequisites: Docker 20.10+, Docker Compose v2.0+, make, git, 4GB free RAM, and the ports listed in docs/ARCHITECTURE.md available.
git clone https://github.com/paruff/uFawkesObs.git
cd uFawkesObs
cp .env.example .env
$EDITOR .env # set GRAFANA_ADMIN_USER and GRAFANA_ADMIN_PASSWORD
make init # prints the Linux chown commands below
make up # starts the core stack + demo app that emits real metrics/logs/traces
./scripts/wait-healthy.sh
On Linux, run these chown commands between make init and make up. The
containers run as non-root users and cannot write to the bind-mounted data/
directories otherwise, so Prometheus, Loki and Tempo crash-loop and make up
fails with dependency failed to start. macOS (Docker Desktop, colima) does
not need this:
sudo chown -R 472 data/grafana
sudo chown -R 65534 data/prometheus data/alertmanager
sudo chown -R 10001 data/loki data/tempo
Open Grafana at http://localhost:3000. See docs/ARCHITECTURE.md for every port, credential, and health-check command, and docs/TROUBLESHOOTING.md if something doesn't come up cleanly.
First time here? docs/WALKTHROUGH.md walks through every command above — what it does, what you should see, and what to do if you don't.
To run additional profiles (demo telemetry generator, Discord alerts, DORA metrics), see docs/ARCHITECTURE.md. The DORA metrics profile uses SQLite by default — no external database is required (the Postgres backend was decommissioned in #275).

uFawkesObs is the observability plane in the Fawkes IDP family — a suite of composable platform engineering stacks. The active uFawkes (Docker Compose) suite is Obs, Pipe, DevX, and Dojo, plus ufawkes.dev as the suite's public site — Fawkes itself is the Kubernetes-track graduation target, not a suite-tier peer. See When to Graduate to Fawkes for that path.
| Plane | Role | Repository |
|---|---|---|
| uFawkesObs | Observability — metrics, logs, traces, dashboards | GitHub |
| uFawkesPipe | CI/CD — pipeline orchestration, deployment events | GitHub |
| uFawkesDevX | Developer experience — golden paths, IDP templates | GitHub |
| uFawkesDojo | Learning — belt-level curriculum for uFawkes and Fawkes | GitHub |
Scaffolding template (not a suite plane): uFawkesAI — an AGENTS.md/agent-instruction template implementing the DORA AI Capabilities Model, used to build every repo above. See uFawkesAI.
Retired from the active suite (2026-08-18): uFawkesRes (resources plane — see docs/notes/res-status.md) and standalone DORA metrics/Security repos, both merged into uFawkesObs/uFawkesPipe respectively. See AGENTS.md §10 for detail.
Fawkes is not a consumer of this repo. It runs its own Kubernetes-native observability stack and replaces uFawkesObs wholesale when a team graduates — see When to Graduate to Fawkes for what carries over.

This repo follows the shared Fawkes and uFawkes design reference: DESIGN.md, with tokens at https://ufawkes.dev/design/tokens.json. It is owned by uFawkes.dev.
See CONTRIBUTING.md for how to report bugs, suggest features, and submit pull requests. For paid help beyond free community support, see SUPPORT.md.
We're closing in on calling uFawkesObs "beta" and want to hear from real users first — especially if you starred/forked this repo but never actually ran it, or you tried it and got stuck. Tell us what happened in Beta Feedback discussion — a sentence is enough.
