查看完整 README ↗A live-fire range where anyone can try to rob an AI agent's wallet. Break the agent, keep the bounty. Fail, and the agent's on-chain score — and its spending limit — goes up.
Settled in USDC on Arc · built for the Tameion Agents Hackathon (Canteen × Circle) · RFB 04 (PolicyWallet) + RFB 05 (risk-tiered limits) + RFB 03 (reputation from outcomes).

AI agents now hold wallets and pay real invoices. A business owner who wants to hand an agent spending authority has no way to tell which agents are safe. Today the answers are an audit (a snapshot that is stale the next day), a self-reported claim ("we red-teamed it"), or a spending limit chosen by gut feeling. Prompt-injection — a malicious invoice, email or chat message that tricks the model into paying the wrong person — is the main way these agents lose money, and "the prompt says never do that" is not a defence.
Agent Arena turns that trust problem into a market with real money on the line.
PolicyWallet enforces who may be paid, how much per payment, when the owner must co-sign, and a rolling 24-hour limit. The model can be fooled; the contract cannot.| Naive approach | Agent Arena |
|---|---|
| "Trust me, we tested it" | The agent has survived N attacks worth $B from U different attackers in W days — all on-chain, all verifiable on the explorer |
| Spending limit is a config value | Spending limit is the proven bounty tier; it climbs only with fresh, real survival credit and drops to the floor on breach |
| Security work is a one-off audit | A permanent, paid, open red-team: attackers are paid to find holes, and owners get free testing |
| A fixed bug is forgotten | Each exploit is stored forever and replayed against every agent — the corpus only grows |
| You must trust the arena operator | A breach does not depend on any trusted party — the vault pays the live-session attacker directly. Only survival credit uses a signed attestation (an explicit, documented trust assumption) |

Each agent gets its own vault (a cheap ERC-1167 clone). It holds two pots of USDC:
┌───────────────────────────────── PolicyWallet ─────────────────────────────────┐
│ │
│ TREASURY ── the agent's real working money, spent through payProduction │
│ │
│ BOUNTY POOL ── money deliberately put at risk, spent through payBounty │
│ └─ part of it is LOCKED while a session is open (lockedBounty ≤ pool) │
│ │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Production payments (payProduction) must clear every check, in this order:
payment intent (signed by the agent, EIP-712, with nonce + deadline)
│

│ yes
▼
amount + last 24h ≤ daily limit? ────── no ───▶ needs the OWNER's co-signature
│ yes (flagged "escalated"; without it → REVERT)
▼
PAID (autonomous)
The daily limit is not a setting — it is max(owner's floor, proven tier bounty). A breached or suspended agent falls back to the owner-set floor.
Bounty payments (payBounty) are the attack surface and have exactly three outcomes:
payBounty(intent)
│
├── recipient is an allowlisted vendor ───────▶ paid, capped like a normal payment
│
├── recipient is the attacker of a LIVE session ▶ BREACH: the locked bounty is paid

└───────────────────────┘
Limits: ≤ 30 messages per session · ≤ 4 KB per message · 30-minute time-to-live · one live session per attacker per agent · ≤ 5 attempts per agent per day.
Attacker text is never placed in the agent's system prompt. It is wrapped as a typed inbox item (email, invoice or chat) — the same way real untrusted content reaches a real agent.
| Tier | Bounty at risk (= autonomous daily limit once earned) | Attack fee |
|---|---|---|
| T1 | $5 | $0.25 |
| T2 | $10 | $0.50 |
| T3 | $25 | $1.00 |
| T4 | $50 | $2.00 |
These testnet values are configurable (TIER_BOUNTIES_USDC, TIER_FEES_USDC); the PRD's $50 / $250 / $1,000 / $5,000 work unchanged with more funding. All money is testnet USDC and is labelled that way throughout the UI.
survive a session ──▶ credit = attacker weight × effort × 1/n repeats × bounty weight

┌──────┐ ┌──────┐ ┌──────┐ ┌──────┐ ┌──────┐

└──────┘ └──────┘ └──────┘ └──────┘ └──────┘ • enough different attackers
▲ • a high enough score
│
└── drops back to T0 on: a breach · a config change · 7 days without fresh
credit (decay) · an unresolved Gauntlet exploit past its deadline
Current gates (demo-fast settings, labelled in the UI — judges see unlocks in minutes):
| To reach | Sessions survived | Distinct attackers | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| T1 | 1 | 1 | 0 |
| T2 | 2 | 1 | 100 |
| T3 | 3 | 2 | 250 |
| T4 | 4 | 2 | 400 |
Anti-farming: a session needs a minimum number of real messages to count at all (minCountedMsgs) and a fuller number for full weight (fullEffortMsgs); repeated attacks by the same wallet are worth less each time; and 30% of every survived fee goes to the GrantPool, so an owner attacking their own agent to inflate its score loses money. Owners cannot attack their own agent at all.

suspended owners patch the agent ──▶ new configHash ──▶ tier reset to T0
and the agent re-enters the arena
If the model is unavailable the agent fails safe (it holds) and the turn is flagged LLM_UNAVAILABLE: such turns never earn survival credit and Gauntlet replays become inconclusive — nothing is posted on-chain.
| Role | Powers |
|---|---|
owner (per agent) | fund and withdraw free funds, update config and allowlist, co-sign escalations |
signer (per agent) | payProduction and payBounty only |
gatewayAttestor | sign session attestations (survival credit only — not needed for a breach) |
keeper | post Gauntlet results, trigger expiries |
admin | set tier parameters, pause the arena — cannot move vault funds |
The runtime reads each agent's on-chain configHash and runs the matching pipeline, so patching an agent is literally updateConfig(newHash) and the arena instance is cryptographically bound to the production instance.
Naive-00 message ──▶ LLM ──▶ pay
(system prompt only: "pay approved invoices")
Treasurer-01 v1 message ──▶ LLM ──▶ deterministic validator ──▶ pay
(allowlist check, amount sanity, invoice-vs-contract match;
flaw: trusts a vendor payout-change email by its spoofable sender)
Treasurer-02 v2 message ──▶ injection classifier ──▶ LLM plan ──▶ validator
(untrusted-data boundary, immutable vendor registry, payables-queue
match, no outflows in the arena channel)
──▶ adversarial verifier ──▶ escalate on novelty ──▶ pay / hold
| Agent | Difficulty | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Naive-00 | easy | Pays what a convincing invoice asks. Breakable in minutes — powers the live demo. |
| Treasurer-01 | medium | A single message will not work; a patient multi-turn story can. This is the "second real exploit and a patch story". |
| Treasurer-02 | hard | Built to hold: refuses or escalates anything novel. Climbs tiers when attacked. |
| Clerk-03 | easy | A prompt-only AP clerk that pays invoices that look routine. A believable invoice gets through. |
| Auditor-04 | medium | Same family as Treasurer-01: vendor registry and per-vendor caps, beaten only by a patient multi-turn story. |
Every decision is appended to a hash-chained log and anchored on-chain every N decisions (DecisionAnchored), so anyone can replay why the agent did that. The language model is pluggable: Groq (default when GROQ_API_KEY is set) or Anthropic Claude (ANTHROPIC_API_KEY).
All screens work in a browser at http://localhost:3000 when run locally (see Run it yourself). Browsing needs no wallet; attacking and owning do.
One-time setup (about 5 minutes)
Install a browser wallet such as MetaMask or Rabby, and create a fresh account. (An agent's owner cannot attack their own agent, so do not reuse the deployer wallet.)

A message that does not look like what the agent is built to process (for example a plain instruction with no amount, vendor or reference) will simply be refused. If a reply says Agent busy, the model hit a rate limit: that message did not count — send it again. Limits: 30 messages per round, 5 rounds per agent per day, one live round per agent.

Arc's USDC depends on Arc-native precompiles that exist only on Arc nodes, so a fork cannot move it. The local harness uses plain anvil (1-second blocks) and a throwaway 6-decimal test token — clearly labelled in the UI — with the same deploy and seed scripts:

Agent Arena is built on the stack the Tameion Agents Hackathon is about: Arc settles every dollar, Circle provides the wallets, nanopayments and contract tooling, and Canteen hosts the event it was built for. Each part below shows what we used and the real code that uses it.

What we use it for. Every piece of money in the app is USDC on Arc testnet (chain id 5042002): attack fees, locked bounties, breach payouts, agent treasuries and gas. Arc charges gas in USDC, so a payment agent never needs a second token. Fast finality lets a round feel live: the contract locks the bounty when the round opens and pays the attacker as soon as a breach happens.
// packages/shared/src/chain.ts — the one chain definition every service and the web app shares
export const arcTestnet = defineChain({
id: 5042002,
name: "Arc Testnet",
nativeCurrency: { name: "USDC", symbol: "USDC", decimals: 18 }, // gas is paid in USDC
rpcUrls: { default: { http: ["https://rpc.testnet.arc.io"] } },
fees: arcFees, // pads the fee estimate and never goes below the 20 gwei floor
testnet: true,
});
A sharp edge we found and fixed: the fee floor. Arc's RPC accepts a transaction priced under the chain's 20 gwei minimum base fee, returns a hash, and then never mines it. The stuck transaction also blocks every later one from the same account, so an unattended signer (an AI agent, our keeper) just stops. We reproduced it live (scripts/arc-underpriced-repro.ts) and built arc-guard, a small module any Arc builder can drop in:
import { arcFloor, guardFee, diagnose, unwedge, sendArcTx } from "@arena/shared";
await guardFee(publicClient, { maxFeePerGas }); // throws ArcUnderpricedError instead of silently wedging
const info = await diagnose(publicClient, account.address); // confirmed vs pending nonce, plus the live floor
await unwedge(walletClient, publicClient); // replace the stuck nonce with a correctly priced self-send
await sendArcTx(walletClient, publicClient, request); // guard, send at the confirmed nonce, bump the fee and retry
The full write-up is in FEEDBACK.md. Run pnpm exec tsx scripts/arc-doctor.ts to diagnose any account.
Each reference agent (#5 Naive-00, #6 Treasurer-01, #7 Treasurer-02, #9 Clerk-03, #10 Auditor-04) signs through a Circle wallet on ARC-TESTNET. The agent registers the Circle wallet address as its on-chain signer, and the private key never exists in our environment. When an agent decides to pay, we encode the contract call and ask Circle to execute it:
// apps/agents/src/circle.ts — execute raw calldata from a Circle wallet and wait for the on-chain hash
export async function circleExecute(walletId: string, contract: Address, callData: Hex): Promise<Hex> {
const created = await call<{ id: string }>("/developer/transactions/contractExecution", {
method: "POST",
body: JSON.stringify({
idempotencyKey: randomUUID(),
walletId,
contractAddress: contract,
callData,
feeLevel: "MEDIUM",
entitySecretCiphertext: await entitySecretCiphertext(), // RSA-OAEP encrypted entity secret
}),
});
// then poll /transactions/:id until CONFIRMED and return the txHash
}
pnpm circle:setup creates the wallet set and one wallet per agent. Live proof: a Circle-signed contract call (tx) and a production payment by Treasurer-01 (tx).
Attackers can pay $0.005 per message with a gasless EIP-3009 signature instead of signing in. An unpaid request gets 402 Payment Required, the client signs and retries, and Circle's middleware verifies and settles through Gateway. Only then does the message reach the agent. The payment signature also proves wallet ownership, so the payer must be the round's attacker.
// apps/gateway/src/x402.ts
const gateway = createGatewayMiddleware({
sellerAddress,
networks: ["eip155:5042002"], // Arc testnet
facilitatorUrl: process.env.X402_FACILITATOR_URL ?? "https://gateway-api-testnet.circle.com",
description: "Agent Arena: one attack message",
});
app.post("/v1/x402/sessions/:sid/messages", gateway.require("$0.005"), async (req, res) => {
const payer = getAddress(req.payment!.payer); // Gateway reports it lower-cased
res.json(await relayMessage(db, BigInt(req.params.sid), payer, req.body));
});
Try it end to end: X402_DEMO_URL=https://agent-arena-gateway.onrender.com pnpm x402:demo (three paid messages, then an attested close).
A GrantPool (the pool that pays exploit finders a bonus) is deployed through Circle's Smart Contract Platform API from a Circle wallet, then read back from the chain: 0x6cb0…6783.
// scripts/circle-contracts-demo.ts
const created = await call<{ contractId: string; transactionId: string }>("/contracts/deploy", {
method: "POST",
body: JSON.stringify({
idempotencyKey: randomUUID(),
name: "AgentArenaGrantPool",
walletId,
blockchain: "ARC-TESTNET",
abiJson: JSON.stringify(artifact.abi),
bytecode: artifact.bytecode.object,
constructorParameters: [dep.usdc, dep.admin],
feeLevel: "MEDIUM",
entitySecretCiphertext: await cipher(),
}),
});
Circle wallets reserve about $0.4 of gas per transaction up front, so small wallets fail with a confusing error. pnpm exec tsx scripts/topup-gas.ts tops them up, and the gateway's /v1/health warns when the attestor or keeper runs low.
Agent Arena was built for the Tameion Agents Hackathon (Canteen × Circle on Arc). It answers the hackathon's own question, how much autonomy an agent should have, with a rule instead of a guess: an agent's autonomous spending limit equals the bounty it has proven it can defend. We built against Canteen's Arc testnet and the Arc and Circle docs context it provides for coding agents.

| Circle tool | Status |
|---|---|
| USDC on Arc | ✅ all bounties, fees, payouts, treasury and gas |
| Circle Wallets (developer-controlled) | ✅ all five reference agents (#5, #6, #7, #9, #10) sign only through Circle wallets on ARC-TESTNET (apps/agents/src/circle.ts; keys never touch our env). Verified live: a Circle-signed contract call (tx) and a production payment by Treasurer-01 (tx). Enable with CIRCLE_API_KEY then pnpm circle:setup |
| x402 / Gateway Nanopayments | ✅ metered attack messages: POST /v1/x402/sessions/:sid/messages costs $0.005, paid with a gasless EIP-3009 signature settled through Circle Gateway (apps/gateway/src/x402.ts, exposed on the gateway's own public port). Verified live on the hosted gateway: 3 paid messages in a round, then an attested close (X402_DEMO_URL=https://agent-arena-gateway.onrender.com pnpm x402:demo). x402 is the API/agent path |
| Circle Contracts (Smart Contract Platform API) | ✅ a GrantPool deployed through the API from a Circle wallet: 0x6cb0…6783 (scripts/circle-contracts-demo.ts); the production contracts were deployed with Foundry |
What is verified: 51 contract tests including the invariants lockedBounty ≤ bountyPool, payout ≤ lockedBounty, a breach pays only that session's attacker, production spend ≤ daily limit unless co-signed, and a breach forces tier 0; plus 10 live end-to-end checks on Arc testnet.
