一分钟完成验证Kanban board for VirtualBoard feature specs inside Herdr: columns are the lifecycle, cards are specs, and dispatching a card starts a role agent in a pane.

herdr-board gives Herdr a kanban board whose cards
are prompts in a SQLite database. This plugin answers a different question: you already have a
board — it is in your repository. VirtualBoard keeps feature specs as markdown under
.virtualboard/features/, with the directory as the status and vb as the tool that moves them.
So herdr-virtualboard owns no cards. It renders the repository, dispatches agents at it, and writes
every change back through vb:
vb, so the index, the audit log, and the lock file stay correct, and
a teammate running vb move from a shell sees the same board you do..virtualboard/agents/ — backend_dev, qa, architect, and the rest. The charter becomes the
agent's system prompt, so it adopts the role VirtualBoard already expects it to announce.backlog → in-progress → review → done, with in-progress ↔ blocked. An agent reporting success moves its feature to the column's success route; failure and
blocked route to theirs. hvb never invents a transition VirtualBoard forbids.hvb is the TUI, the CLI you drive by hand, and the CLI dispatched agents report
through.herdr plugin install virtualboard/herdr-virtualboard
Open the board:
herdr plugin action invoke open-virtualboard --plugin herdr-virtualboard
Requirements: Herdr 0.9.0 (socket protocol 22), the vb
CLI, a Go toolchain for the install-time build, and a
VirtualBoard workspace (vb init). Linux and macOS.
Not configured automatically. Add it to ~/.config/herdr/config.toml:
[[keys.command]]
key = "prefix+shift+v"
type = "shell"
command = "herdr plugin action invoke open-virtualboard --plugin herdr-virtualboard"
description = "open the VirtualBoard kanban (overlay)"
With Herdr's default ctrl+b prefix that is Ctrl+B Shift+V. Do not use prefix+v — lowercase
single letters are where Herdr keeps its own bindings. Then herdr server reload-config.
Install the Herdr integration for whichever harness you dispatch:
herdr integration install claude # or pi, codex, opencode, antigravity-cli, …
herdr integration status
With it, Herdr reports precise working / blocked / done per pane and hvb can tell a finished
agent from a stalled one. Without it, dispatch and hvb run done still work; hvb just cannot notice
an agent that finished without reporting until its pane closes.
hvb never installs an integration itself — that writes into your harness's personal configuration.
| Key | Action | Key | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
←/→ h/l | focus column | ↑/↓ k/j | focus card |
⏎ | card detail | esc q | back, then quit |

x | cancel the active run | r | refresh |

The board reloads every few seconds, so a teammate's vb move or another agent finishing shows up
without you asking. Below about 108 columns it switches to a single-column layout with a lifecycle
breadcrumb, so it stays usable in a narrow split or on a phone.
Moving a card into in-progress — with m, or L — asks one question:
┌──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ FTR-0007 is now in progress │
├──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ Add retry to the uploader — start an agent on it? │
│ │
│ ▸ No — I will work on it just move the card │
│ Agent, in the project works in the working tree │
│ Agent, in a worktree isolated checkout, own branch│
│ Agent, worktree + PR pushes and opens a PR │
└──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Declining is the default and one keystroke away, because most moves are a human picking the work up themselves. The preselected row follows your configuration, but never lands on one that starts an agent unless you asked for that.
The move itself is lifecycle-checked first — illegal destinations are shown and greyed out with the reason, because an absent option looks like a bug while a disabled one teaches the lifecycle:
A worktree run gets its own checkout on feature/FTR-0007/add-retry-to-the-uploader,
cut from the default branch and opened by Herdr as a linked workspace beside the
project — so the agent edits a different directory from the one you are looking
at, and the sidebar shows both. The card is marked ⑂ while it runs.
With + PR, a successful run pushes that branch and opens a pull request against the base, with the feature's acceptance criteria and the agent's commits in the description, and writes the link back into the spec's Links section.
The same from the shell:
hvb run start FTR-0007 --worktree --pr
hvb run cleanup FTR-0007 # remove the checkout when you are done
Nothing about this is on by default: no worktree is created, no branch is cut and no forge is contacted unless a dispatch asks for it.
The first dispatch into a new worktree usually stops at the harness's own trust prompt for a directory it has never seen. That is not a failure — hvb parks the task, tells you to answer the dialog, and submits it by itself once the agent is ready. It never answers that dialog for you.
Pressing d on a card opens the role picker, pre-selected from the feature's labels — backend
suggests backend_dev, ui suggests frontend_dev, anything in review suggests qa. A role:
label overrides the guess entirely. Then hvb:
vb lock for the configured owner,ftr-#### Herdr tab,tab ftr-0007
└─ anchor pane a plain shell; the split parent, closed once the launch succeeds
└─ run pane cwd = project root, env = HVB_FEATURE_ID, HVB_RUN_ID, HVB_ROLE, …
The launch is pane-first because that is Herdr's contract: agent start never creates layout, so
the pane must already exist with its cwd and environment set.
hvb feature list --status review # what needs checking
hvb feature new "Add retry to the uploader" -l backend -l reliability --priority P1
hvb feature move FTR-0007 in-progress # vb enforces the lifecycle
hvb run start FTR-0007 --role backend_dev --focus
hvb run list # what is running now
hvb run log FTR-0007 # what that agent is saying
hvb doctor # when something is wrong, start here
--json works on everything. Errors go to stderr in a stable envelope with stdout left empty, so a
script can parse stdout unconditionally.
| Noun | Verbs |
|---|---|
hvb feature | list, show, new, move, set, note, delete, validate |
hvb run | start, list, show, done, comment, cancel, focus, log, cleanup |
hvb role | list, show |
hvb harness | list |
hvb tui · hvb doctor · hvb skill · hvb version |
The first five mirror vb's own, so a script driving both branches on one set of numbers.
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
0 | success |
1 | validation failed |
2 | feature or run not found |
3 | illegal lifecycle transition |
4 | unmet dependency |
5 | lock conflict |
6 | Herdr unavailable or unsupported |
64 | hvb refused the invocation itself — usage, a bad enum, a missing $HVB_RUN_ID |
skill/SKILL.md is the contract, and hvb skill prints those exact bytes, so an
agent can read what it is held to rather than take hvb's word for it. The short version:
$HVB_FEATURE_ID;hvb run done --outcome success|failure|blocked. Two writers moving one spec is how a board and a repository drift apart, which is why the agent reports and hvb moves.
Optional. ~/.config/herdr-virtualboard/config.toml for defaults, .hvb.toml beside
.virtualboard/ for per-project overrides, merged field by field.

Forges. GitHub goes through the gh CLI, so it uses the credentials you
already have and needs no token here. Forgejo and Gitea use their REST API and
need one, from forge.token or $HVB_FORGE_TOKEN. Anything else — including a
self-hosted forge on a hostname that gives nothing away — degrades to a compare
URL you can click, which is also what happens when a token is missing or
rejected. A pull request that cannot be opened never fails the run: the agent
has already done the work and committed it.
A route the lifecycle forbids is rejected when the file loads, not when a dispatch fails hours
later. The project file lives beside .virtualboard/ rather than inside it, because
vb init --update re-applies the upstream template over that directory.

The e2e suite is hermetic: stub vb and herdr binaries mean it never touches your Herdr session,
never starts an agent, and never makes a provider call.
