Save any web page, or just the part you select, as clean Markdown. Ready for Obsidian, Joplin, Logseq, a Git repo or any notes app. Markdown Saver finds the article, drops the menus, adverts and sidebars, and gives you Markdown you can check and edit before you save it.

✨ What it does

• Finds the article on the page with Mozilla Readability, the same reader view code Firefox uses.
• Clean Markdown with Turndown: headings, lists (nested too), tables, code blocks with their language, quotes, links, pictures and task lists.
• Front matter at the top: title, source address, author, date published and date saved.
• Edit before you save in a full size editor tab.
• Download .md, Copy to the clipboard, or Download ZIP with images: the .md file plus an images folder, with the picture links changed to point at it.
• Right-click "Save selection as Markdown" to save only the part you selected.
• Settings for heading style, bullet character, code fences, inline or reference links, bold and italic marks, and the file name ({title}, {site}, {domain}, {date}).

🚫 What it won't do

• Browser pages and add-on stores (such as chrome:// pages and the Chrome Web Store) cannot be read by any extension.
• Pictures some sites refuse to share. Pictures are fetched the way the page itself fetches them. If a site blocks that, the picture link in the ZIP still points to the web, and Markdown Saver tells you how many.
• Pages behind a login work only while you are logged in, as you see them.
• Keep the page open until the ZIP is saved. The pictures are fetched through that page, so if you close it, reload it or move on, pictures from sites that block other apps stay as web links.
• No preview of the finished page. You see and edit the Markdown itself, not a rendered copy.

MarkdownSaver.zip is the same package as the Chrome and Edge downloads.

Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera and Vivaldi

1. Unzip the download somewhere you'll keep it.
2. Open chrome://extensions (or edge://extensions).
3. Turn on Developer mode.
4. Click Load unpacked and pick the markdown-saver folder.

Firefox

1. Open about:debugging#/runtime/this-firefox.
2. Click Load Temporary Add-on and pick MarkdownSaver-firefox.zip.

Firefox removes temporary add-ons when it closes.

Build it yourself

The code in this repo is the Chromium version. manifest.firefox.json is the Firefox manifest. Run ./build.sh to make every package in dist/.

🧭 How to use

1. Open the page you want to keep and click the Markdown Saver icon. An editor tab opens with the Markdown.
2. Change anything you like. The settings on the right rebuild the Markdown straight away (if you have edited it, you are asked first).
3. Click Download .md, Download ZIP with images or Copy.

To save part of a page, select it, right-click and pick Save selection as Markdown.

⚙️ How it works

• grab.js runs in the page only when you click. It copies the page, finds the article with lib/Readability.js, swaps lazy loading placeholders for the real pictures, keeps the language of each code block and makes every link a full address.
• convert.js turns that HTML into Markdown with lib/turndown.js and lib/turndown-plugin-gfm.js (tables, strikethrough and task lists), and adds the front matter.
• editor.js shows the result and saves it. For the ZIP it asks the page you saved to fetch each picture (the page fetches it just as it would itself), so no extra site permissions are needed, then packs everything with zip.js.
• background.js handles the toolbar button and the right-click menu.

🔑 Permissions

Permission	Why
activeTab	Reads the page you clicked the icon on (or right-clicked), only at that moment.
scripting	Runs the article finder in that page, and fetches its pictures for the ZIP.
contextMenus	Adds Save page as Markdown and Save selection as Markdown to the right-click menu.
downloads	Saves the .md file or the ZIP.
storage	Remembers your settings, and holds the page for the editor tab.
clipboardWrite	Lets Copy put the Markdown on the clipboard.

No site permissions. It can't read any page until you click it there.

🔒 Privacy

Markdown Saver only reads the page you click it on, and only when you click. It has no account, no analytics and sends nothing anywhere. Pictures for the ZIP come straight from the website to your computer. The only things it stores are your settings, and the page it is showing in the editor tab until you close the browser.
