auri

auri is a small terminal UI for looking at your repository: a file explorer with syntax-highlighted previews, and a VS Code–style source control view with side-by-side diffs. Mouse and keyboard both work.

• Explorer — lazy file tree with git status decorations and a syntax-highlighted file viewer you can edit in (i); nothing is written until you save with Ctrl-S.
• Source Control — staged / unstaged changes, side-by-side diffs (n/N jump between changes), stage, unstage and discard.
• History — browse past commits and the diff of every file they touched.
• Commit — write a message and commit; optionally let an AI CLI draft the message from your staged changes.

Install

Update — auri update checks GitHub for a newer release and installs it in place of the running binary (needs curl).

Prebuilt binaries are attached to every GitHub release.

Requirements: git on your PATH. A terminal with true color gives the best highlighting.

Usage

Folders without Git open in the Explorer with file previews, editing and explicit saving. Source Control, history and AI commit messages require a Git repository. To create one, click Initialize Git (or press c) and confirm Initialize. Source Control becomes available immediately; files are not staged or committed automatically. Inside a repository, auri opens its worktree root.

The left sidebar has two views — Explorer and Source Control — switch with the tab bar, e or c. The right side shows the open file or diff. Drag the dividers to resize.

Lists — j/k or arrows to move, g/G top/bottom, Enter to open. In the tree, l/h expand/collapse.

Changes — Space/s stage or unstage, a stage all, d discard, i edit the file.

Edit in auri — in the file viewer, i (or Enter) starts editing and Esc stops. i in Changes or in a diff opens that file in the editor (at the first change in view, from a diff); the title shows ● while there are unsaved changes. Nothing is saved automatically: Ctrl-S saves. Quitting or opening another file with unsaved changes asks Save / Discard / Cancel (Ctrl-C twice quits without saving). If the file changed on disk meanwhile, your edits are kept and saving asks whether to overwrite it or reload it. Shift+arrows or a mouse drag select; Ctrl-Z/Ctrl-Y undo/redo; Ctrl-X/Ctrl-C/ Ctrl-V cut/copy/paste (copies also go to the system clipboard through OSC 52); Tab/Shift-Tab indent; Enter keeps the indentation.

Diff / file viewer — j/k scroll, PgUp/PgDn, h/l scroll sideways, n/N next/previous change (diff).

Commit box — type, Enter to commit, Ctrl-J for a new line (the box grows; pasted text keeps its line breaks and never commits), Esc to leave. Ctrl-A or the amend toggle switches to amending the last commit: an empty box gets its message, and nothing needs to be staged.

AI commit messages (optional)

Ctrl-G (or the ✦ button in the commit box) asks an AI CLI to write a one-line message from the staged diff. It only fills the input — it never commits. Esc cancels, Ctrl-T switches provider.

Supported providers, which must be installed and logged in: Codex CLI (codex) and opencode (opencode).

Configuration

Preferences are saved automatically to ~/.config/auri/preferences.toml (or $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/auri/, or $AURI_CONFIG_DIR if set). Everything is optional:

Known limitations

• No Windows support. Prebuilt binaries are macOS and Linux only.
• The built-in editor is simple. No search/replace, no multiple cursors, one file at a time. Binary files, files over 4 MiB and files that aren't UTF-8 open read-only. Copying to the system clipboard needs a terminal with OSC 52 (in tmux: set -g set-clipboard on).
• Merges that end up identical to HEAD. If every conflict is resolved back to the last commit's version, nothing is left staged and auri refuses the merge commit with "Nothing staged", even though git would accept it. Finish it from the shell with git commit.

Why "auri"?

Latin for of gold. Albireo, the famous double star in Cygnus, shows a gold and a blue star side by side — two views of the same spot in the sky, like a diff.
