The Central Bank of Madagascar (Banky Foiben'i Madagasikara, BFM) publishes the daily closing rate of the Marché Interbancaire de Devises — the interbank foreign-exchange market it operates — in ariary per unit for 19 currencies: the US dollar, euro, pound, Swiss franc, yen and the other majors, the rand, the Mauritian rupee and Djibouti franc, the Indian rupee and yuan, and the SDR. The ariary floats, and the BFM's MID rate is the official reference Malagasy customs, the tax administration and the banks convert at; our archive runs from September 2023.

• Publication: every business day; the exact schedule, freshness status and any current delay are on the Central Bank of Madagascar (BFM) rates page
• In the API: usually by 15:30 UTC (measured over the last 10 publications). Schedule a sync at or after that time and retry hourly until rate_date moves; every response carries the same figure as available_by_utc — see when to poll

🧭 Reading the numbers

• value is always quote currency per 1 unit of base currency (base: "EUR", quote: "USD", value: 1.15 means 1 EUR = 1.15 USD).
• Central Bank of Madagascar (BFM) quotes MGA per 1 unit of foreign currency (e.g. base: "USD", quote: "MGA" means MGA per one US dollar).
• Need the other way round? Ask getRate(target, source) and the API inverts or crosses for you, flagged derived: true — never divide a published rate yourself in a compliance workflow.

⚖️ Published vs derived rates
