Python 3.10 or newer. Everything installs from pre-built packages — no compiler, and on macOS no Homebrew.
Windows
git clone https://github.com/Gadzhovski/TRACE-Forensic-Toolkit.git
cd TRACE-Forensic-Toolkit
powershell -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File install_windows.ps1
TRACE.cmd
macOS, Linux and WSL
git clone https://github.com/Gadzhovski/TRACE-Forensic-Toolkit.git
cd TRACE-Forensic-Toolkit
./install.sh
./trace
The installer finds Python 3.10+ (on Windows every version the py
launcher knows), installs the system libraries on Linux (apt, dnf,
pacman or zypper: Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, RHEL/Rocky, Arch, openSUSE),
then checks that the forensic engines, Qt and libmagic load before it says
TRACE is installed. TRACE.cmd / ./trace start TRACE from anywhere; the
manual way still works (venv\Scripts\activate or
source venv/bin/activate, then python main.py). It can be run again at
any time: a usable venv is kept, a broken one is rebuilt.
A standalone app (Windows .zip, macOS .dmg) is built with
python build_app.py, and every push builds them on GitHub Actions.
Every change to master is installed from scratch and tested on Windows,
macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel) and Linux, against public forensic test images
(DFTT, DFRWS, NPS, NIST). File carving is scored against the answer keys their
authors published. Run the suite locally, in parallel, with:
python tools/fetch_test_images.py
python -m pytest -n auto --dist loadfile
