Lookout lets you build a custom camera detector in the browser. You describe what it should notice, give it some example photos, and train a small model in the page. When the detector sees what it was trained for, it can speak, show a notification, or send a message to Slack, Discord, a webhook or an email address. You describe what it should notice, give it some example photos, and train a small model in the page. When the detector sees what it was trained for, it can speak, show a notification, or send a message to Slack, Discord, a webhook or an email address. You don't need to write code or prepare a dataset.
Live: lookout.vision
index.html that runs the detector when opened, so developers can use it in their own projects.Detectors are saved in the browser as you work. An optional account lets you back them up and restore them on another machine.
The homepage also has a live demo that recognises around 80 everyday objects and draws boxes around them, across one or more cameras, without any training.
Any detector you train can be exported from the Deploy & export step as a zip. It contains everything needed to run the detector outside Lookout, including a page that runs it straight away:
desk-watcher/
index.html double-click to run it on your webcam
README.md how the detector works, with example code
metadata.json labels, feature model, image preparation, trigger settings
model/model.json the trained classifier, in TensorFlow.js layers format
model/weights.bin
model/detector-data.js the same model data as a script, for opening index.html from disk
photos/desk-is-empty/ the training photos, one folder per group
photos/im-at-my-desk/
Unzip it and open index.html. There's nothing to install and no build step. The page shows live confidence for each group, and fires when the watched group holds for the time you set in Lookout. It's a single readable file, so it also works as a starting point for your own code.
A detector is two models used one after the other: the standard MobileNet v2 feature model, which turns an image into 1280 numbers, and your trained classifier, which turns those numbers into a score per group. Using it in any TensorFlow.js project takes a few lines:
import * as tf from "@tensorflow/tfjs";
import * as mobilenet from "@tensorflow-models/mobilenet";
const metadata = await (await fetch("desk-watcher/metadata.json")).json();
const classifier = await tf.loadLayersModel("desk-watcher/model/model.json");
const featureModel = await mobilenet.load({ version: 2, alpha: 1.0 });
// canvas: a 320x320 centre-cropped frame, mirrored if it came from a webcam
const output = tf.tidy(() => classifier.predict(featureModel.infer(canvas, true)));
const scores = await output.data();
output.dispose();
const best = scores.indexOf(Math.max(...scores));
console.log(`${metadata.labels[best]}: ${Math.round(scores[best] * 100)}%`);
metadata.json records how the training images were prepared (square centre crop, 320px, webcam frames mirrored). Prepare new images the same way, otherwise accuracy drops without any error. The photos are ordinary JPEGs, so they can also be used to train a model with other tools.
Each integration is enabled by an environment variable. If one isn't set, that feature is disabled in the UI with a note explaining why, and the rest of the app works as normal. See .env.example for the full list.
| Variable | Enables |
|---|---|
ANTHROPIC_API_KEY | AI-assisted labelling, which also needs the Supabase keys below, since it runs on a free account with a monthly allowance |
BREVO_API_KEY or RESEND_API_KEY, plus EMAIL_FROM | Email triggers |
NEXT_PUBLIC_SUPABASE_URL, NEXT_PUBLIC_SUPABASE_ANON_KEY | Accounts, backup, run links, and the allowance behind AI labelling |
npm install
git config core.hooksPath .githooks
cp .env.example .env.local
npm run dev
Then open http://localhost:3000. Without any keys, everything works except labelling, email, accounts and run links.
If you use accounts, apply the migrations in supabase/migrations to your own Supabase project.
src/lib/analytics.ts, and the table that holds them is in supabase/migrations/0004_events.sql.
