Section Writing Stats places a small, continuously updated badge below the inline note title and beside each Markdown heading. It helps you check the length of a chapter, scene, article section, or complete note without interrupting your writing.

A section begins at a heading and ends immediately before the next heading of the same or a higher level.
Parent headings include their nested subsections. In this example, Chapter one includes the introduction and both scenes, while each scene badge counts only that scene:
# Chapter one
Introduction...
## First scene
Scene text...
## Second scene
More text...
This follows the structure of the Markdown document, so lower-level headings remain part of the section above them.
The easiest way to manage a target is through the command palette. Place the cursor in the relevant section and run one of these commands:
Cycle target progress label switches target labels between count, percentage, and remaining.
Choose words, characters, or reading time in the target dialog, or type a unit directly, such as 250w, 1800 chars, 3m, or 45s. Existing targets are filled in automatically when you edit them.
Beside a heading, tap the statistics portion of a badge to open Copy statistics. Tap its separate target portion (the target icon, value, or progress bar) for Edit target and Remove target. These menus work in both the editor and Reading view; you can also right-click or use the keyboard. Ordinary statistics badges never offer target actions. The mobile sticky meter keeps its existing tap behavior.
Targets are stored as ordinary, standalone Target lines, so they remain visible and portable with the note. Command-palette actions always write the canonical Target: ... format. A whole-note target goes before the first heading, after YAML frontmatter if the note has any:
Target: 1200 words
# My draft
Start writing here...
A section target goes beneath its heading:
# Introduction
Target: 250 words
Introduction text...
## Background
Target: 1800 characters
Background text...
Supported formats include:
Target: 250 wordstarget 250wTarget: 1800 charactersTarget 1,800 charsTarget: 3 minTarget: 3mTarget: 2m 30sTarget: 45sTarget is case-insensitive. The colon is optional, but a colon or whitespace must separate the marker from the amount, and an explicit unit is required. Targets must occupy the entire line, not appear inside prose, a list, a quote, code, or frontmatter. Counts must be positive whole numbers; commas must group thousands correctly. A duration can be minutes, seconds, or both; when combined with minutes, seconds must be between 0 and 59.
For example, Target: 500, Target500w, Target: +300 words, Target: 1,00 words, and Target: 500 words today are not targets and remain ordinary note text.
In Live Preview, valid target lines appear as small chips with a target icon, showing the amount, such as 250 words. Click a chip, or move the cursor onto its line, to see and edit the text as usual. The chip only changes how the line looks: the note always keeps the plain Target: line, and Source mode, Reading view, and other apps show it as text. Lines that aren't valid targets, such as Target: 500, stay as plain text, so you can tell at a glance whether a target was recognised. You can turn chips off with Show target lines as chips in settings.
Target lines are excluded from the statistics. A parent target covers the complete parent section, including nested headings. A nested section can define its own target, which takes priority while the cursor is inside that section.
Progress bars update while you write. They use your theme's accent colour while you work toward a target, turn green with a ✓ when it is reached, and turn orange after the configured overage threshold. In Remaining mode the label counts down ("25 words left") and then shows how far past the target you are ("90 words over"). Prefer the original yellow, green, and red bars? Choose Classic under Progress colours in settings.
Section Writing Stats is designed to measure readable prose rather than Markdown syntax.
It counts text in paragraphs, lists, blockquotes, links, and table cells. It excludes:
Character counts can include or exclude spaces. Reading-time estimates use an adjustable words-per-minute setting.
Heading and title badges work in both the editor and Reading view, using the same display and counting settings. Writing-target commands and selected-text statistics are available while editing.
Settings are grouped by what you're adjusting, with a live preview at the top that you can pin while you scroll:
#-style Markdown headings in both views, not underline-style (Setext) headings.Section Writing Stats 1.1.0 and newer requires Obsidian 1.13 or newer.
Install Section Writing Stats from Settings → Community plugins → Browse in Obsidian, or open its Community Plugins page.
Download main.js, manifest.json, and styles.css from the latest release, then place them in:

Restart Obsidian—or reload the installed plugins—and enable Section Writing Stats under Community plugins.
npm install
npm test
npm run lint
npm run build
For local testing, copy or symlink the repository into .obsidian/plugins/section-meter, build the plugin, and enable it in Obsidian.
To install the local build and the canonical regression note into your existing test vault:
npm run build:local
SECTION_METER_TEST_VAULT="/absolute/path/to/test-vault" npm run install:test-vault
The installer replaces Section Writing Stats test cases.md with the repository's fixture. Use Live Preview to check title/heading editing, target chips, target inheritance, comment exclusions, and horizontal rules. With two Markdown panes open, verify that the status bar follows the active pane and that tapping the mobile meter edits the displayed target rather than the cursor's section. Disable the plugin and confirm its title badges disappear without changing the note title.
