Live: https://ferridash.autogration.co.za (Vercel, region Paris, deploys automatically from main; also at https://ferri-dash.vercel.app). Android and iOS
apps in mobile/ open the same site.
FerriDash stores everything in Supabase: PostgreSQL for the data, and uploaded logos,
profile photos and expense PDFs in a private Storage bucket (ferridash-uploads, created on first upload).
.env.local (never committed) holds:
| Variable | What it is |
|---|---|
DATABASE_URL | Supabase connection string, transaction pooler (port 6543). Percent-encode special characters in the password (@ is %40). |
SUPABASE_URL, SUPABASE_SERVICE_ROLE_KEY | For Storage (server side only, never sent to browsers) |
SESSION_SECRET | Long random string that signs session cookies; use a new one per installation |
Row-level security is on for every table with no policies, so Supabase's public API exposes nothing; the app connects as the database owner and scopes every query to the signed-in user's school.
Put the variables above in .env.local (and in your host's environment settings).
Create the first platform administrator. This also creates the tables if the database is empty. It asks for name, email and password (hidden, at least 12 characters); there are no demo accounts:
npm run db:admin
npm run build then npm start (or deploy to your host), sign in, and add the first school under Dashboard.
npm install
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
npm run dev | Development server on port 3100 (uses the database in .env.local) |
npm run build then npm start | Production build and server |
npm run db:admin | Create a platform administrator (-- --another to add one more) |
npm run db:password | After changing the database password in Supabase: update it in .env.local (tests it first, then copies the new DATABASE_URL for Vercel) |
npm run typecheck | TypeScript check |
node scripts/smoke.mjs <address> | Loads every page as every role and checks role restrictions |
.env.local points at the live database, so npm run dev works on real school data. For development, create a
second Supabase project and use its connection string instead. DB_DEBUG=1 logs failing SQL to the server log.
| Role | Can do |
|---|---|
| Platform admin | Manages schools only: a dashboard to add, edit, suspend and reactivate schools, add school admins and reset their passwords. No access to anything inside a school (learners, results, finance, messages) |
| School admin | Everything in their school: staff, learners, parents, classes, allocation, moderation and publishing, finance, settings |
| Educator | Registers for their classes, mark capture for subjects they teach, reports for their classes, assignments, timetables, notices, calendar |
| Learner | Own dashboard, published results and report cards, attendance, assignments, timetable, messages to staff |
| Parent | Their own children only: published results, report cards, attendance, assignments, timetable, messages to staff |
Learners and parents never see unpublished marks.
7-point scale: 7 Outstanding (80–100), 6 Meritorious (70–79), 5 Substantial (60–69), 4 Adequate (50–59), 3 Moderate (40–49), 2 Elementary (30–39), 1 Not achieved (0–29).
Phase weighting (SBA : examinations): Foundation 100:0, Intermediate 75:25, Senior 40:60, FET 25:75. The June and preparatory examinations count towards SBA; the Term 4 examination is the final exam. Until it is captured, year marks and promotion outcomes are marked provisional.
