An AI-powered pipeline for building and analyzing historical text corpora from public domain archives.
This project downloads OCR'd texts from Internet Archive (and potentially other public domain sources) on specific historical topics, then uses Claude to analyze patterns, trace concept evolution, and generate research insights.
Current Focus: History of automation, computing, and "thinking machines" (1850-1950)

The web app now uses:
public/raw_texts/text-embedding-3-small query embeddings against a prebuilt local vector index (data/semantic/)/api/search combines lexical + semantic + quality priorsconfig/terms.yaml and exported to public/data/terms.json/methods and /pathways/automata-to-ai for proposal-facing framingnpm run build:terms
npm run build:semantic-index
Optional controls:
node scripts/build-semantic-index.mjs --max-docs 40 --languages en,fr --max-chunks-per-doc 16
npm run build:search
npm run dev
npm run build
npm run build now generates concept data, Next.js output, and Pagefind assets so deployed search works on Vercel.
Set these in the Vercel project (Preview + Production as needed):
OPENAI_API_KEYSEMANTIC_EMBED_MODEL (defaults to text-embedding-3-small)Do not use NEXT_PUBLIC_ for the OpenAI key.
Edit config/search_terms.yaml to customize topics and multilingual search terms:
topics:
automata_artificial_beings:
en: ["automaton", "mechanical man", "thinking machine"]
computing:
en: ["calculating machine", "difference engine", "digital computer"]
automation:
en: ["automation", "mechanization", "robotics"]
# Add your own topics and languages here
To adjust date range or per-term caps, edit scripts/ia_historical_corpus.py:
START_YEAR = 1850
END_YEAR = 1950
MAX_ITEMS_PER_TERM = 50
