Read the full README ↗I spend a worrying amount of my life checking how many tokens I have left, so I made it stay on screen. Hachibu is a small strip on top of your Mac's screen that shows Claude Code's model, effort, and usage limits. One glance is enough, and you can get back to your work.
The name comes from hara hachi bu (腹八分), the Japanese habit of eating until you are 80% full.
Hachibu is an unofficial tool made by an individual. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Anthropic, PBC.
Download Hachibu for macOS (macOS 13 or later, Apple Silicon or Intel). macOS blocks the first launch because the app is not notarized yet. You need to allow it once in System Settings > Privacy & Security; First launch shows each step.
Using 0.3.2 or earlier? Those versions cannot tell you about updates. Download 0.4.0 once and replace
Hachibu.appin your Applications folder; your settings stay. From 0.4.0 on, Hachibu lets you know when a new version is out. See Updates.

Opus5• xhigh · S42 W76 F93 reads as: model, effort, then usage. The small dot after the model name means a 1M context. S is the 5-hour limit, W the weekly limit, and F a per-model weekly limit (the first letter of the model's name). The menu has How to Read the Strip, which lists the same.
Hachibu works on its own. No other tools are needed.
~/.claude/settings.json. Effort follows /effort: a level you change during a session is read from the conversation, and effortLevel in settings.json is used only when the conversation has none. If you set up the statusLine below, its values are used when they are newerYou can switch the usage API on or off at any time from the menu bar item or the strip's right-click menu. Turning it off takes effect immediately: Hachibu stops reading the keychain and sending requests, and drops the values it got from the API. Hachibu does not create a login of its own, so there is nothing to revoke on Anthropic's side.
Pick how much of the strip you want to see. Hover to expand it to Standard temporarily.
| Mode | Shows |
|---|---|
| Standard | Model, effort, and usage |
| Usage only | Usage numbers such as S42 W76 F93 |
| Tucked | A small handle at the edge of the screen. Its ring shows the highest usage level |
| Hidden | Nothing. Show it with the shortcut or from the menu bar |
Right-click the strip to switch modes, opacity, and color thresholds. Hovering over an item previews it on the strip before you choose.
The menu bar item can show only the icon, a weekly gauge (the icon's slanted cut moves with the weekly usage, the used side turns yellow and red, and the weekly percentage sits next to it as one number), the usage numbers, or the full status. You can also summon the strip with a keyboard shortcut (⌥⌘/ by default). A second shortcut, which you set from Shortcut for Switching Display in the menu, steps through Standard, Usage only, and Tucked. When you record a new shortcut, Hachibu rejects combinations that macOS already uses. Press the new combination once more to confirm that it arrives, then click Save.
If the menu bar item does not appear, macOS is hiding it: turn Hachibu on in System Settings > Menu Bar. The strip's right-click menu shows a shortcut to that setting when this happens, and everything in the menu bar item is also in that menu.
The interface follows your macOS language: Japanese if it comes first in your preferred languages, English otherwise. You can also pick English or Japanese from Language in the menu. The action log is written in the language shown at the time.
Hachibu Lite is a lightweight edition in the same repository: one Swift file and AppKit only, built for Intel Macs on macOS 13. Both read the same statusline.sh, so you can switch between them without changing the statusLine setup. Use one at a time: both use ⌥⌘/, and only the one that started first gets it.

Hachibu.app to your Applications folderHachibu was called Slashstrip up to v0.2.0. If you installed Slashstrip, turn off its Launch at Login, quit it, and move it to the Trash first. Its settings are not carried over.
You need to do this once for each download. Hachibu is not from the App Store and is not yet notarized by Apple (#3), so macOS does not open it until you allow it yourself. These steps follow Apple's Open a Mac app from an unknown developer. The screenshots show macOS in Japanese; the layout is the same in English.
Open Hachibu. macOS shows "“Hachibu.app” Not Opened". Click Done. Do not click Move to Trash
Choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Privacy & Security in the sidebar
Scroll down to Security. It says "“Hachibu.app” was blocked to protect your Mac." Click Open Anyway next to it. The button stays for about an hour after step 1. If it is not there, do step 1 again
Enter your login password (or use Touch ID), then click OK
If Hachibu does not open by itself, open it again. On its first run it asks whether to use the usage API (see Where the numbers come from)
From then on Hachibu opens normally, including at login. When you download a new version, you need to do this again.
If you prefer Terminal, you can remove the "downloaded from the internet" flag that macOS put on this copy, then open it:
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Hachibu.app
open /Applications/Hachibu.app
This skips the check only for this copy. Do either of these only if you trust where the file came from.
Allowing an app that Apple has not checked is a decision you make. Some ways to check this one first:
shasum -a 256 ~/Downloads/Hachibu-macos.zipAfter you update to a new version, macOS may ask again, because the app is not signed with a fixed Developer ID yet.
Hachibu checks GitHub for a new version once a day. When it finds one, it sends one notification for that version and shows Hachibu x.y.z is available at the top of the menu bar item and the strip's right-click menu. Click either to open the download page.
To update, download the new Hachibu-macos.zip, quit Hachibu, and replace Hachibu.app in your Applications folder. Your settings stay. You need to allow the first launch in System Settings again, as described above.
Updates in the menu shows the version you are running, lets you turn off Check for Updates Automatically, and has Check Now. Release notes for every version are on the releases page.
Hachibu.app to the Trashdefaults delete io.github.boxpistols.hachibu
rm -rf ~/Library/Logs/Hachibu ~/"Library/Application Support/Hachibu"
statusline.sh, remove it from the statusLine in ~/.claude/settings.jsonThis is optional. Use it if you leave the usage API off, or if you want the model and effort of the session you are working in.
statusline.sh saves the JSON that Claude Code passes to the statusLine to ~/Library/Application Support/Hachibu/statusline.json, which Hachibu reads. Download it from the release (or use scripts/statusline.sh in a clone) and make it executable:
curl -L -o ~/.claude/hachibu-statusline.sh https://github.com/BoxPistols/hachibu/releases/latest/download/statusline.sh
chmod +x ~/.claude/hachibu-statusline.sh
Then call it from the statusLine in ~/.claude/settings.json:
{
"statusLine": { "type": "command", "command": "~/.claude/hachibu-statusline.sh" }
}
If you already use a statusLine command, pass it as an argument. It receives the same JSON, and its output becomes your status line.
{
"statusLine": { "type": "command", "command": "~/.claude/hachibu-statusline.sh ~/.claude/my-statusline.sh" }
}
Usage limits (rate_limits) appear in the statusLine data on Pro and Max plans, after the first response in a session.
~/.claude/settings.json, and the statusLine file aboveapi.anthropic.com), and the update check once a day (api.github.com, which you can turn off from Updates in the menu). The update check sends only the app's name and version as the User-Agent~/Library/Logs/Hachibu/actions.logYou need macOS 13 or later and the Xcode Command Line Tools (the full Xcode app is not needed). Building needs Swift 5.9 or later (Command Line Tools 15.0 or later). Running the tests (scripts/test.sh) needs Swift 6 or later, because they use Swift Testing. Swift 6 cannot be installed on macOS 13, so there the tests run only in CI.
The landing page at https://cc-hachibu.vercel.app/ lives in site/; see site/README.md.
scripts/build-app.sh # builds build/Hachibu.app
scripts/build-app.sh --install # copies it to ~/Applications and launches it
scripts/build-app.sh --zip # also writes build/Hachibu-macos.zip and its SHA-256
scripts/build-app.sh --app-store # builds the App Store variant (see below)
scripts/test.sh # runs the tests
The App Store variant leaves out the usage API and the update check. It makes no network requests and reads usage only from the statusLine, so it shows S and W but not F. The release on GitHub is the regular build.
CI runs the tests and builds the app on macOS for every push. To release, set VERSION in scripts/build-app.sh, write the notes in docs/releases/v<version>.md, merge to main, and run the Release workflow from the Actions tab. It tests, builds Hachibu-macos.zip for both CPUs, and creates the tag and the release with statusline.sh and the SHA-256. Add the version to NEWS in site/lib/content.ts so the landing page lists it.
Issues and pull requests are welcome. Please run scripts/test.sh before sending a pull request. UI text lives in Sources/HachibuCore/Strings.swift; when you change it, update both English and Japanese.

Hachibu.app
Hachibu
~/.claude/settings.jsonから読みます。

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Hachibu.app
open /Applications/Hachibu.app
Hachibu.appをゴミ箱に入れますdefaults delete io.github.boxpistols.hachibu
rm -rf ~/Library/Logs/Hachibu ~/"Library/Application Support/Hachibu"
statusline.shを設定していた場合は、~/.claude/settings.jsonのstatusLineから外します任意です。
statusline.shは、Claude CodeがstatusLineに渡すJSONを~/Library/Application Support/Hachibu/statusline.jsonに保存し、Hachibuはそれを読みます。
curl -L -o ~/.claude/hachibu-statusline.sh https://github.com/BoxPistols/hachibu/releases/latest/download/statusline.sh
chmod +x ~/.claude/hachibu-statusline.sh
そのうえで、~/.claude/settings.jsonのstatusLineから呼びます。
~/.claude/settings.json、上のstatusLineのファイルapi.anthropic.comと、1日に1回の新しい版の確認のapi.github.comです(確認はメニューの「アップデート」で止められます)。
site/README.mdを参照してください。
scripts/build-app.sh # build/Hachibu.appを作る
scripts/build-app.sh --zip # build/Hachibu-macos.zipとSHA-256も作る
scripts/test.sh # テスト
プルリクエストを送る前にscripts/test.shを実行してください。画面の文言はSources/HachibuCore/Strings.swiftにあります。
