The generateLumonIpsum() function in lib/lumon-ipsum.ts procedurally generates Severance-flavored placeholder text using three word pools:
Lumon Phrases (38 entries) — Canonical quotes and references from the show, including "The work is mysterious and important", "Praise Kier", "Your outie loves you very much", "Tame thy tempers", and more.
Filler Words (37 entries) — Lumon-themed vocabulary like "data", "refinement", "protocol", "innie", "outie", "temper", "corridor", "malice", "discord", and "goat".
Common Words (20 entries) — Standard English filler words like "the", "and", "to", "of", "with", etc.
For each paragraph:
The result reads like corporate Lorem Ipsum with an unsettling Lumon Industries aftertaste.
The UI uses a corporate-retro palette inspired by Lumon Industries terminals:
| Token | Variable | Hex | Usage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clarity | --clarity | #f3ffff | Hover states, emphasis, highest contrast text |
| Protocol | --protocol | #afcbd6 | Primary text, borders, interactive elements |
| Membrane | --membrane | #beb780 | Accent color (available for future use) |
| System | --system | #79a6b9 | Secondary text, muted elements |
| Sector | --sector | #20464f | Component backgrounds, buttons |
| Archive | --archive | #0e1a26 | Page background, terminal body |
Key CSS classes defined in app/globals.css:
| Class | Purpose |
|---|---|
.terminal-screen | CRT monitor container with inset shadow and CSS scanline overlay |
.terminal-content | Text with subtle glow effect (text-shadow) |
.lumon-button | Corporate button with hover inversion effect |
.lumon-input | Minimal number input with bottom border styling |
.arrow-button | Small up/down buttons for input control |
.generated-text | Output container with sector background and border |
.copy-button | Overlaid copy-to-clipboard button |
The app includes comprehensive search engine optimization:
app/sitemap.tsapp/robots.ts# Run all unit tests with coverage
npm run test
# Watch mode for development
npm run test:watch
Unit tests use Jest with React Testing Library and cover:
# Install browsers (first time only)
npx @e2e-dev/web install chromium firefox webkit --with-deps
# Run the suite. Locally this includes phone and tablet viewports.
npm run test:e2e
# One browser
npx e2e run --target firefox
Agent steps need XAI_API_KEY in .env.local (gitignored). e2e.config.ts loads that file when it exists.
E2E tests live in tests/ as *.e2e.ts:
tests/core/ — Core feature smoke teststests/accessibility/ — Keyboard and ARIA checkstests/compatibility/ — Generate and copy controls, run on every browsertests/visual/ — Terminal styling, cursor, and MDR animationtests/performance/ — Load time, generation time, and repeated generationtests/seo/ — SEO metadata validationtests/text-generation/ — Text generation end-to-end flowstests/edge/ — Edge case and error scenariosGitHub Actions runs on every PR to main:
The e2e jobs read XAI_API_KEY from the repository secret of the same name. Agent steps are recorded in .e2e/cache/ and committed. CI replays those recordings and does not write new ones. --strict-cache fails the Chromium job when a recording no longer matches the page, instead of calling the model. Each job posts its results as a pull request comment and uploads .e2e/artifacts so the comment's screenshot, video, and trace links resolve.
The app is configured for Vercel deployment with automatic deploys from the main branch.
To deploy manually:
main branch — Vercel auto-deploys| Variable | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|
NEXT_PUBLIC_SITE_URL | No | Canonical site URL (defaults to https://www.lumonipsum.com) |
XAI_API_KEY | For e2e agent steps | xAI API key. Locally in .env.local; in CI, a GitHub Actions secret |
git checkout -b feature/amazing-feature)git commit -m 'Add some amazing feature')git push origin feature/amazing-feature)CI checks (lint, test, build, e2e) must pass before merging.

The work is mysterious and important.
