A tracker for home poker games: accounts with admin approval, friends, guest
players, chip-set-aware buy-in calculation, live session tracking, and a
leaderboard.
• Next.js 16 (App Router, Turbopack)
• Postgres via Docker Compose (local dev), Prisma 7 as the ORM
• NextAuth (Auth.js) v5 with a credentials (email/password) provider

npm install
docker compose up -d # starts Postgres on localhost:5433
npm run db:seed # creates the first admin account
npm run dev # http://localhost:3000
The seed script creates an admin user from these env vars (with fallbacks baked in for local dev):
[email protected] ADMIN_PASSWORD=yourpassword ADMIN_NAME="Your Name" npm run db:seed
If you don't pass them, it defaults to [email protected] /
changeme123 — log in and change the password by re-running the seed with a
real password once auth includes account settings (not built yet).
docker compose up -d — start local Postgres (data persists in a Docker volume)npx prisma migrate dev --name <description> — create + apply a migration after editing prisma/schema.prismanpm run db:studio — Prisma Studio, a GUI for browsing/editing tablesPostgres runs on port 5433 (not 5432), since this machine already has a Homebrew Postgres service bound to 5432.
Needs the local Postgres container running (docker compose up -d). Tests use
their own throwaway database (poker_home_games_test, created and migrated
automatically) and refuse to run against anything that isn't a local *_test
database, so they never touch your dev or production data.
| Command | What it runs |
|---|---|
npm test | Unit + API tests (Vitest, ~10s) |
npm run test:unit | Pure logic only: chip calculator, leaderboard/streaks, money, no database |
npm run test:api | Every API route and the leaderboard query against the test database |
npm run test:e2e | Browser tests (Playwright): builds the app and clicks through the real UI on port 3100 |
npm run test:all | Everything |
Re-running browser tests without rebuilding: E2E_SKIP_BUILD=1 npm run test:e2e.
First-time setup on a new machine: npx playwright install chromium.
Covered: signup/approval/login/roles, admin queue and account management,
guest merging (into accounts or other guests), friends and suggestions, the player picker, chip sets and the chip plan,
creating/joining/running/closing/deleting games, rebuys and cash-outs
(including $0), multi-table seating (9 max), account settings, and the
leaderboard (sorting, streaks, guests). The known gaps test in
tests/e2e/admin.spec.ts documents a real issue and is expected to fail until fixed.
/signup (email/password) — it's created with PENDING status./admin/requests and approves or rejects.APPROVED users can access the app; PENDING users are shown a waiting page. This is the foundation: auth + admin approval are fully wired up. Friends,
games (chip-set calculator, live buy-in/rebuy/cashout tracking), and the
leaderboard are scaffolded as placeholder pages/nav links and still need to
be built out — the data model for all of it already exists in
prisma/schema.prisma.
