A modern ant colony simulation for the web — spiritual successor to SimAnt (1991). Deterministic, open source.

A modern ant colony simulation game, built for the web. A spiritual successor to Maxis's SimAnt (1991) — same core idea (you are the colony, not an individual ant; you influence behavior through allocation and pheromones rather than direct control), with contemporary design, determinism, and moddability baked in from the start.
Status: early development. The simulation is working end-to-end and playable at a rough level; art, audio, and polish are ongoing. Expect things to change. See the roadmap for the current phase structure and what's next.Read the full README ↗A modern ant colony simulation game, built for the web. npm run verify | Format check + lint + typecheck (src + scripts + tests + bench + root tooling configs + eslint-rules/, the rule modules and their contract tests) + type-aware lint + sim-boundary/asset-path/e2e-geometry/layout-discipline/ant-cycle guards + unit tests (CI's verify job; e2e is a separate job) |
Subterrans has strict architectural rules that exist to support determinism, testability, and long-term portability. The short version:
src/sim/ is pure TypeScript. No Phaser, no DOM, no browser APIs, no Math.random, no Date, no floating-point math. The simulation runs in Node headlessly.Full detail in ARCHITECTURE.md. A condensed contributor reference lives in AGENTS.md.
We welcome contributions, and the project is partly an experiment in AI-driven development — so contributions written with AI coding assistants are the norm, not the exception. See CONTRIBUTING.md for the full guide, and CODE_OF_CONDUCT.md for community expectations.
