Vivid™
Your media. Vivid.
An open-source media app for iPhone, iPad and Apple TV.
I’m building Vivid as an open-source media app for iPhone, iPad and Apple TV. Connect your own media server and browse and watch your library across your Apple devices.
Vivid is still in development. The source is public, and beta access is offered through the TestFlight link, subject to available places and device eligibility. There is no public App Store release yet.

Saved server accounts, login sessions, optional Vivid PINs, profile order, shared preferences and configured Seerr, MDBList and OpenSubtitles credentials can sync through the user’s encrypted private iCloud vault across iPhone, iPad and Apple TV for matching server accounts and viewing profiles. Deleting a saved account records that deletion so an older device cannot add it back. Downloads, artwork caches, playback and subtitle preferences stay on the device; watched and resume state remains owned by the connected media server. Optional MDBList sync exports newly completed or explicitly marked watches after the server confirms them, and syncs watchlist additions and removals in both directions. It does not import either service’s existing watched history or replace server resume positions.
I’ve built the TV experience around a configurable Home spotlight, local Home metadata caching, separate movie and series libraries, and saved server accounts with optional profile PINs. Search uses seven posters across the available width, and a short press of the Siri button anywhere in the app searches by voice. TV cards share consistent title and year captions. Detail pages include TMDb trailers and ratings, server-only More Like This, compact playback selections and a Start Over menu when you long-press Resume. The Apple TV guide covers the current behaviour and validation status.
The mobile app uses a configurable glass tab bar, a looping Home spotlight and local Home metadata caching. For You combines Watchlist, Favourites and Collections, and Calendar shows upcoming episodes of your shows and what's coming soon. Search and Settings are full-screen pages with slide-up/down transitions, portrait on iPhone and rotatable on iPad and the iPhone Duo's inner screen. Movie, series and actor details open full-screen on iPhone and iPad, staying above Search during playback. iPhone details use interactive zoom transitions, with X to close and Back from actor pages. Movie and series pages show aligned video/file and audio information. The player offers five quality choices with a one-time lower-bitrate reload for the capped modes. On iPhone Duo, Vivid uses both screens, the side status bar and the half-folded position; see iPhone Duo. The app design guide covers the layout and device-testing limits.
Playback on Apple TV, iPhone and iPad is powered by Lucid Engine. Vivid keeps its own controls, episode countdown, subtitles and optional intro, recap and credits skips. See the playback guide for audio preferences and current device coverage.
Vivid is available in six languages on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV.
Vivid follows your device's language, or you can pick one for Vivid in Settings > General > Language. Top Shelf, TMDb collection names and the Calendar's Trending list follow your choice too, while titles and descriptions from your server stay in its metadata language. The translations were made with AI help and haven't been reviewed by native speakers yet, so corrections are very welcome. The localisation guide covers how Vivid picks its language and how to add one.
TMDb is built in and brings trailers, ratings, Studios & Networks and collection rows, with nothing to set up. Optional plugins add more on top of your server, using your own free keys. MDBList sends your finished movies and episodes to MDBList and keeps your watchlist in sync both ways. OpenSubtitles finds and downloads subtitles from a movie or episode page, or while you watch. The plugins guide shows how to set each one up and what you get.
[!IMPORTANT] Yes, I use AI to help develop Vivid. I design the app and all of its development, and use AI to assist me.
App changes released from main get a semantic version. Documentation-only and housekeeping updates do not create releases. Release titles are just the version number, with dot points underneath saying what changed. The full rules are in the release docs.
Join the Vivid Discord to get help, share feedback and follow the project. Feel free to invite anyone who might enjoy Vivid.
If you'd like to support Vivid's development, you can sponsor me on GitHub Sponsors. Testing the app, reporting issues and spreading the word helps a lot too.
